I Am a Sci-Fi Fan – I Really Am!
Honest!
Sometimes in spite of what is shown on TV, Movies, or written in books.

bardicraven) and I have spoken a lot about Star Trek. After all, she does quite a bit of fanfic – mostly DS9 these days. So, that is what comes up most of the time. Which is far from all that she writes – but it is something she normally comes back to.
As most fans are well aware of, that Brand has its issues, some well known, and some not.
There are a couple of things that bother me more than others; and those are what I will speak of here.
A lot of this stems from the time period The Original Series (TOS) was first put on the air – 1966 to 1968. That show acquired a lot of baggage from people’s attitudes from that time period.
For instance, TOS actually glorified the concept of colonialism – which was, at best, problematic.
As we have learned from our own history on this Planet (it’s out there, though you have to search for it – too much of what is called “history” is either revisionist, or at least partially fiction) colonialism nearly always causes problems later on.
To be fair, some later shows did show the ugly underside of that. However, there is still the "plant the flag, and now you belong to us” assumptions that too many people have.
The Star Trek Brand really needs to fix that. So, the Federation in the stories can be more 24th Century, and less late 1960’s. The Federation really needs to be more “right minded” in what it does to people – both its own, as well as others it meets with.
One other issue also stems from the time period (though there WERE those who knew better then…) is the Materialist, very Newtonian Mechanics Philosophy that these shows have. And that is in spite of the Warp Drive, Transporters, and Interspace Radio that people conveniently forget to explain.
The Materialist Worldview is on its way out; it would have been long gone if it were not for those who hang onto it for dear life.
As far as psychic functioning is concerned, when it does show up, it does so in very limited form. In TOS, Spock was a touch telepath, and in The Next Generation, Counselor Troi was only an empath.
In the better than half a century since TOS went off the air, a lot more is known – although not as not common knowledge as would be preferred. You can’t make people see something if they refuse to look.
Putting blinders on so you don’t see the evidence – and then claiming there IS no evidence is NOT how the game of science should be played!
Yet people do it anyway!
Head shake and eye roll…
I’ve seen mathematical derivations from Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity showing that Warp Drive CAN work. We are not near ready to build starships, but, the MATH WORKS!
Thanks to the Bell Theorem and Entanglement, there are those who have teleported sub-atomic particles, a very early start to be sure, but a start!
Another implication of entanglement is the very real possibility of instantaneous communication. People are already experimenting with it in a very primitive form.
Even though the early experiments for psychic functioning dates back to the late 19th Century, the research has exploded, starting in the early 1970’s and it continues to this day. If you are even remotely open-minded, the experimental evidence is overwhelming!
What we know today is that it is NOT electronic – there have been too many parapsych experiments carried out in Faraday Cages for that to be a possibility. And we now know that it (psychic functioning) is “non-local”. In other words, TIME and SPACE is NOT a limitation. In other words, instantaneous communication is real. And as the experimental and production Remote Viewing results have shown us – THERE ARE NO SECRETS!
Period!
Birdy and I talk about cannon, fanon, and beta-cannon, - the various truths that fanfic writers use when they write their stories. And I have joked that the cannon in question is rusty, has parts missing, and badly needs repair. Or as Birdy says, it should just be shoved out of the airlock!
